Hunter's Fortun No. 4

I've been sitting on this one for a little bit, but the solicitations just came out, so now I'm freed to post at will. Above is one of two covers for the final issue of the Boom! comic miniseries Hunter's Fortune. The second cover is by the ever talented, Phil Noto.

Anywho, the series follows a young man (Hunter) who has inherited his recently deceased uncle's fortune. However his uncle has placed a stipulation on Hunter's inheritance, which is that in order to retain the many millions of dollars his uncle had, he must set out and uncover the mythic sword of Excalibur! Rough.

Because of the Excalibur theme, I decided to do a stained glass motif a la classic medieval architecture. It was not my first instinct. Here's alook at the sketches I did for the cover.

This issue involved a character named Miranda who is also in search of the sword, and serves as a bit of a foil to our protagonist. There's also some reference to the 'Lady of the Lake', so I went slightly more conceptual showcasing Miranda AS the 'Lady.' This was my first sketch.

This was my second sketch. Pretty much the same as the final cover, though originally I had Miranda oriented at the top. Hunter being the main character, I was asked to flip the composition around. Even still, I tried to make each view of the illustration equally engaging. Hopefully that's true.

Big Apple Con Round Up

Above is a commission from the Big Apple Con that I just didn't have the time to get to last weekend. Thomas, the kind young man who ordered this commission as well as a few other was understanding enough to allow me to finish up the drawing for him at home. I felt bad about making him wait, so I decided to add in a little color to this one. Hope you like!

Big Apple Con Round Up

Well the weekend has come and gone, and with it my very first Big Apple Con.
I had a great time, and drew a TON. Here's a look at most of the commission I did there:

A slightly perturbed Hulk-

Ethereal lovers - Dr. Stephen Strange and his lady friend, Clea-

None other than Dave Stevens jet pack wielding Rocketeer-

A sprinting Green Lantern-

A rather confused Spider-man on Halloween-

A member of Batman's rogues gallery, The Mad Hatter-

DC's Teen Titan empath, Raven-

Everyone's favorite Justice League member that can talk to fish, Aquaman!

(actually, the dude who commissioned this drawing never came to pick it up! If you're reading this good sir, I'll be happy to mail this along to you)

And last is a commission of the character Mina Harker as portrayed in Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen-

The drawing was actually commissioned by none other than Scott Adsit of 30 Rock fame. Scott was a really nice guy, and apparently a huge comic fan. Here we are together with Mina-

So there you have it, my weekend in drawing. There's some new stuff going on with my online store as well, but I'll save that for my next post.

Cheers.

A long time ago... Team-up in a half shell

It's been a busy busy time these past couple month - which has been great! Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to show anything that I've been working on until projects are announced, yada yada... So anyway, instead I decided to post an image from the vault.

It's a depiction of everyone's favorite sarcastic sai wielding mutant reptile, Raphael! This one hails from all the way back to 2003, when Marvel comics hot shot Paolo Rivera and I were still in school together. I had asked Paolo to draw something in my sketchbook. He drew this. I inked it.
Apropos to this early collaboration, Paolo and I have decided to team up once more. Assuming we aren't too slow to pull it off, we're looking to debut a new collaborative print at the Big Apple Con this weekend. Stay tuned for updates.

Odds and Ends: Interview'd!

Hey all,
Just thought I'd let everyone know I was just recently interviewed by Tennessee's own Brett Williams. Brett's a writer and beard enthusiast who also has a deep love and appreciation for comics. He keeps up a blog dedicated to the medium where you can read his reviews, musings, and of course, our interview. Check it out!

Also, I didn't realize it was coming out yet, but this past Wednesday saw the release of Madman -Atomic Comics no. 17. It, on it's own merits, it's totally worth a trip to the comic shop. But also within this issue is a pinup art gallery including the works of Jim Rugg, Craig Thompson, James Jean and yours truly. Scope it!
Also, just to add a little more meat to this post, here's a look at some of my initial sketches for the pinup. Enjoy!

Wednesday Comics - ish fo'

Another week, another Wednesday, and with it comes the release of issue 4 of Wednesday Comics. We're now a third through the series and all the stories seem to ramping up this week. Worth checking out, says I.

Here's a look at the (sans Busiek dialogue) art for this issue-

And some preproduction sketches -

Oh Livejournal account....

Why have I forsaken thee? You're like the Evil Bart Simpson I keep hidden in the attic, only to occasionally drop a few table scraps with.

I'm sorry, kid! I am. I'll try and do better... I - Why I've got some posts for you right now. Yeah! That's right. See? I wasn't joking, was I? Okay here goes...

(please nobody tell LJ that most of the following was stolen off my blogspot)

1. Wednesday Comics!
Huzzah the first issue has finally been released! What is Wednesday Comics you ask? Here's the rundown:
"DC Comics gives a fresh twist to a grand comics tradition with Wednesday Comics, a new, weekly 12-issue series by some of the greatest names in comics today!
"Wednesday Comics is unique in modern comics history: Reinventing the classic weekly newspaper comics section, it is a 16-page weekly that unfolds to a sprawling 28" x 20" tabloid-sized reading experience bursting with mind-blowing color, action and excitement, with each feature on its own 14" x 20" page."

Here's a preview of the first page, sans Kurt Busiek's brilliant writing.

And here's a look at the printed page side by side with its original. For comparing and such.

2. Mike Allred's MADMAN

Here's a look at a pinup I just recently finished up for the spectacular Mike Allred. I love all of Mike's works, and in particular his Madman series. So I was really flattered when he asked me to draw a pinup for the up and coming final issue of the series' current run for Image comics. It was a blast to work on.

3. Other stuff
We'll finish up this post with a selection of pinups and recent commissions I've done at conventions.

Kitty Pryde-

Princess Leia Organa

Raven (of Teen Titans fame)

Starfire (also of Teen Titans fame)

Batgirl

And that does it for this mega-post. More to come soon. (I swear!)

Random things...

Recently I found myself doing a google search of my own name (We've all done it, don't judge me!) and I happened upon this old convention sketch I'd done -

Slimer (of 'The Real Ghostbusters')

Also, a little while ago Maris and I had decided to watch all of the Star Wars movies from end to end (including all the Clone Wars cartoons) and afterwards I found myself in quite a Star Wars drawing mood. I had meant to draw a bunch of favorite characters, but so far just managed one - Princess Leia

(I'll repost her once she's all finished and colored)

AND - before I leave you, allow me to link to this comic Maris and I had made in collaboration a little while ago. It was created as a submission for Julia Wertz's craigslist 'missed connections' anthology. I didn't get in unfortunately, but now FINALLY has arrived on the interscape for your enjoyment.

New York City Comic Con: 2009

So I'm back from the immense New York City comic-con of this past weekend. Recuperating.

It was a lot of fun, if a bit draining. Here's some pictures!

The Table. For anyone considering getting a table at one of these things, let me recommend getting a full table. The half was a little crammed. Good times though.

Sketches! I did a lot of these over the weekend, and was pretty happy with all of them. Here they all are in roughly the order I drew them.
The "Kamen Rider Amazon"!

(No worries. I had no idea who it was either)

Darth Vader

Old School Iron Man

A uh.. "hot chick with a sword" (This was specifically asked for)

The Flash!

Wonder Woman

And a couple Hal Jordan/Green Lanterns for good measure.

So there you have it, my weekend in drawing. Many thanks go out to Paolo Rivera and roommates for letting Maris and I bunk at his place. Beyond that it was really great seeing M.K. and Liz Baillie, as well Project:Rooftop guru, Dean Trippe! I only wish I had time enough to hang out with everyone I wanted to. L'sigh...

Scott Pilgrim mega-post

So I'm a big Scott Pilgrim fan. I love those books. There's some really great storytelling there by Bryan Lee O'Malley as told through a really wonderful, simple style. More over, the real strength of those books lies with the many, varied, well developed and interesting characters O'Malleys has populated his world with.
A little under a year ago I re-read the series, and was inspired to draw a run of some of my favorite characters from the story. Originally I had posted all of these on my blogspot, but now here they are all condensed into a single livejournal post.

Enjoy!

Scott Pilgrim:

Ramona Flowers

Envy Adams:

Kim Pine:

Wallace Wells:

Knives Chau:

And some sketches:

(no subject)

Last night I found myself watching the first Star Wars movie and decided to do some sketching. Here's what I ended up with -

The likenesses aren't exactly dead on, but hopefully they each feel like their respective characters...

Doctor Mrs. The Monarch

You asked for it, so here it is...

Okay, okay, really only one of you asked for it - but it sounded like a lot of fun to draw one last costume for the character, so I couldn't resist. Anyway, all this Dr. Girlfriend drawing has really gotten me in a Venture Bros. mood, so I'm thinking I'll draw a small set of pin-ups themed around the show.
Next up Triana Orpheus.

Dr. Girlfriend

So this past summer I was attending the Wizard World Convention in Philadelphia, where I had the pleasure of hanging out with fellow comic artists, Reau and Mike. One of the nights after the convention we were hanging out drawing, and got onto the subject of the television show, 'The Venture Bros. We got to talking about how much we love the show, and Mike in turn whipped up this really awesome Brock Sampson sketch. I told him in response, I would do a drawing of one of my favorite characters from the show, Dr. Girlfriend. Five months have passed since then (I suck), but I finally did it. Here it be:

As I was doing this I couldn't quite decide between which two of the character's costumes I'd want to draw her in - So I did both. You can see the other at my blogspot here.

And here's one more Venture Bros. related image from way back in May of 2007 - Doctor ORPHEUS!!

Descent: Journeys in the Dork

Last weekend Maris and I were lame-o's and didn't do anything for Halloween. We got trick or treaters, sure. And THEY had costumes, yeah. But at the end of the day, we were left feeling a bit empty - our role playing needs unfulfilled.
Enter: Descent: Journeys in the Dark: The Board Game!
'Descent' is an incredibly nerdy and meticulously designed fantasy/role playing board game. One of our friends had scooped it up and was very excited about it. He hooked us into it, and that Saturday night, Maris and I assumed the roles of falconer and mage.

Here then am I as Sorcerer Supreme: LANDREC THE WISE!

DC Comics Project: Sneak Peek

A couple of months ago I had the good fortune of meeting writer extraordinaire, Kurt Busiek. He was very nice, and voiced an interest in collaborating on some comics work together. That has finally coalesced into a pretty cool project, being spearheaded by DC's own Mark Chiarello. I spoke with Mark on this, and he said it would be okay to show the general public just a wee sample of what it is exactly that I'm working on, but that he wants to keep a lid on the project for the most part. So I can't actually say much about it. Anyway, here are some sketches:

(psst... It's going to be a Green Lantern story)
